City Wide Youth Workshop, June 21-25

For those who have kids / teens, ages 10-19, love to sing and worship God, and needing to be in a positive environment to engage with other young people throughout the City, Billie Foster, Faye Johnson (Mt. Enon), Kaykay Forte and Minister Josh Washington (husband of gospel singer Cherry Washington) have put together an awesome initiative for our young people in the City of Dayton that will lead up to a City Wide on going Youth Choir.

They are hosting a City Wide Youth Workshop with host church Macedonia Baptist Church the week of June 21 – 25, with the concert climaxing on June 27th; clinicians are Josh Washington (Minister Music of the project), Devon Gooding, recording artist Markey Montague (Omaha Nebraska), and Ben Lofton. There will be more information to come; I just wanted to give you all a heads up in advance!!!

A Steam-Filled Mirror

I've often heard that the reoccuring phases of life are we are either in a storm, just coming out of one or about to enter one. The last few months I've felt like all three of these phases have at some point been applicable. Most recently I am in a different place. I'm realizing that I've been in a struggle....with me. This struggle has not been my typical, but a space I've not occupied much in my 30s. That may be why I didn't recognize it immediately. I've entered a zone of questioning myself. I've recently questioned my talents and abilities, my threshhold for the insignificant, and-dare I admit it- even my intelligence. I can't remember a time I've wondered if I'm smart enough to meet the challenges that face me. It's always been how I could make "it" happen, not if.

Now, I'm mentioning this NOT to get a pep talk. I know how great God is and I am convinced not of my own power or strength, but of Him working through me. What I do feel is an integral investigation is probing what would make someone question their abilities and skills? What has been given enough power to infiltrate and obliterate what is true about self? There is nothing wrong with self-reflection and pausing to make sure a healthy and realistic ego is maintained, but a steam-filled mirror should not be considered an accurate reflection.

I believe a steam-filled mirror is an excellent analogy for this concern. When temperatures rise, our reflection of who we really are becomes cloudy and distorted. We see who we are, but it's only the faint outline, the blurry structure not the strength in the build, the persistence of the heart and the phenominal mind. It's not until we wipe the mirror or change the atmosphere when we see our true selves. But no matter what obstruction or environment may impact my vision, I must remember it's still me. I may not see clearly, but it's still me.

Every now and then storms come. That's life. Times may heat up, but I can't make decisions using a steam-covered mirror. I am educated, talented, complex, tenacious, and strong. That stands on its own right and is no less true when compared to someone else's strengths. My abilities are not discounted by another's, and I am convinced He who has begun a good work IN me will carry it on to completion (Phil. 1:6). That alone is motive to attempt to keep my mirror clean.

By the way, steam-makers stay away!!!!

PK Stories: Letters to my younger self

There are few differences between a PK and any other normal person. The spotlight is just hotter. We come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities. Some of us follow in our parents' footsteps into the wide world of ministry. Some of us rebel against what we feel is a calculated and scripted path by our parents. When referencing the behavior of some preachers' kids, the fact that their parents are in ministry is often illuded to being the reason of mischief or transgression. Yet, while we are like any other person, there are those who are completely unprepared for the life and journey of those who love, support and are born into the family of a preacher.

As you think about your journey, what would you tell your younger self if you had the opportunity? Yes, we learn as we grow and go through things and there may not be an ounce of regret present, so what words of encouragement would you share? What hope would you give?

PK Magazine

Greetings all.  This comes after years of wanting to provide opportunities to support and encourage children and families of  Pastors, Ministers and Preachers.  Now, there are enough websites, ezines, and ministries that offer support to Preachers and their families that one may ask, why yet another?

There are so many critiques and sources of criticism that the hope was to provide an alternative.

Also, many preachers' family members are part of or head ministries.  This space would also serve as a way to inform our community of upcoming events and resources.

All are welcome to submit articles and information at preacherskidsmagazine@gmail.com.
